Why are Birds and Fish dying worldwide?

Since January there have been hundreds of other events of this nature worldwide, I am trying to track down all the information need to continue this post. It is obvious that many people have grave concerns regarding this topic, judging by the amount of views this post alone receives on a daily basis. If you know of an incident, please post a link to it in the comments section, and I will in turn, update the original post.

The past week has seen some pretty crazy things happen in the animal Kingdom.  Thousands of birds  and millions of fish have died worldwide in the last week alone. Some say that the die-offs are all connected, others say they are circumstantial. Some Scientists say this is a natural phenomenon, while skeptics argue otherwise.

If mass die-offs don’t freak you out then the conspiracy theories that try to explain them certainly will. Everything from Rouge planets zipping the Solar System to a Shadow Government plot to spread the Avian flu to the human population, conspiracies on this topic abound. When news of the Arkansas incident hit the airwaves, internet queries on apocalyptic biblical prophecy skyrocketed.

Animal die-offs are not a new thing. In fact they happen every year, all throughout the year, but they seem to occur the most around seasonal changes, or when there are large and quick variations in temperature or weather. Most scientists claim this is the case.

Who is right? Who knows…

In fact Scientists say things like this will continue because, well.. they always happen.

Conspiracy theorists also say the die-offs will continue, but for different reasons, and those reasons are varied. So far the prevailing thought is that the birds and fish are getting confused because the magnetic poles are shifting around a bit. Others believe that this is a sign that a massive earthquake is about to strike. Indeed, some of the incidents do occur over fault lines. Also, consider that these events are happening in populated areas, how many of these animals are dying in places far away from human eyes?

You’ll have to make up your own mind as to who is on the right track. But for your convenience I’ve compiled a list of the die-offs in chronological order, and I will update it as I get more information on this story.

Scarlino, Italy -

A two kilometer long stretch of dead fish, crabs, shellfish, and mollusks is found along the shoreline of Scarlino, Italy. No cause is determined.

Beebe, Arkansas -

Just before midnight on New Years Eve thousands of birds fell out of the sky. Residents awoke the next day to see the corpses of roughly 5-6000 blackbirds littering the roads, rooftops, and lawns around the town of Beebe in Arkansas. Officials claim that the Birds sustained some kind of trauma, and had massive internal bleeding. Probably due to a fireworks display during the New Year celebrations.

Franklin County, Arkansas -

A day later, 125 miles west of Beebe Arkansas, it was reported that a massive fish kill had occurred. Over 100,000 fish suddenly went belly up in the Arkansas River, covering a stretch of 20 miles. Fish Kills are not an uncommon occurrence, but the size of this one did raise a few eyebrows..

Abergavenny, South Wales -

An environmental agency confirms hundreds of dead fish in a marina. The die-off is blamed on cold water, lack of oxygen, and ice.

Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana -

Jan. 3rd, three days after the incident in Beebe Arkansas, over 500 Blackbirds and Starlings fell from the sky in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Again, officials stated that bird die-offs are not an uncommon occurrence, and that further lab testing would have to be done n the animals in order to determine the cause of death.

Gilbertsville, Kentucky -

A women reported that dozens of birds littered the ground around her mailbox. Officials again were unconcerned about the incident.

Kent Island, Maryland -

Tens of thousands of fish are found dead in the Chesapeake Bay. The cause of death is determined to be “stress due to cold water”.

23 birds found dead in the Japanese Prefecture of Tottori, sparking fears of Avian Flu, test have yet to confirm.

Volusia County, Florida -

Thousands of fish are found dead in Spruce Creek, near Port Orange. Residents claim the fish kill is unusual because the creek is warm, and the size of the kill is larger than previous years.

It is reported that over 100 tons of fish have washed up along the shores of a fishing colony. The cause is unknown.

Southern Illinios -

It is reported on Jan 5th, 2011, that dead birds have been discovered as early as 3 weeks prior by residents living in rural areas of the southern part of Illinois.

Tyler, Texas –

Roughly 200 birds are found dead on a Highway 155 bridge crossing over Lake O’ Pines. Authorities claim it is not uncommon to see dead birds on this bridge, and state that it is unrelated to the phenomenon that took place in Arkansas 4 days earlier.

Wilson County, Tennessee –

A flock of more than 100 birds is discovered dead in Wilson County. Cause of death is unknown. This comes a few weeks after another large group of birds were discovered dead in Davidson county.

Falkirk, Sweden –

About 100 Birds were found dead on the morning of January 5th in Falkirk, Sweden. The dead animals were sent off for testing, cause of death is unknown.

Chesapeake Bay, Maryland -

Earlier reports from the third of January described a “fish kill” in Chesapeake Bay that numbered in the “tens of thousands”. On the 5th of January, the Baltimore Sun reported it to be somewhere north of 2 million.

Lincoln Park, Michigan -

Hundreds of dead fish found in a pond in Lincoln Park. Deaths are attributed to cold weather, although investigators are looking into it.

Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand -

Hundreds of Snapper wash up on the shores of Coromandel Peninsula. Cause of death is Unknown. Several Fishermen report that further out to sea there is a “carpet of them” in the water.It is speculated that the fish could have been killed by a fish net that detached from it’s boat.

40,000 dead crabs washed up along the shores of the southern county of Kent in Great Britain. The Cause of death is believed to be temperature variations.

Murray State University, Kentucky -

Hundreds of dead birds are found in the area around Murray State University. the Species of birds discovered were grackles, red wing blackbirds, robins and starlings. Cause of death is unknown.

Folly Beach, South Carolina -

Thousands of dead “bait fish” (Menhaden) line the shores of folly beach “as far as the eye could see”. The cause of the kill off is blamed on “unusually cold water”. Eyewitnesses report that Blackbirds and Grackle were pecking at the dead fish. This follows a die-off of thousands of Starfish a few weeks earlier.

Around 35 birds are reported to have died in the area. Cause of death is unknown. Local Animal control says they “hadn’t seen that many dead birds in an isolated area.”

Sullivan, Missouri -

Dozens of dead Starlings along the side of the road cause concern for local residents. Reporters counted at least 50, with much more likely dead in the surrounding fields.

40,000 dead fish are discovered in the Catarroja Ravine. Officials speculate that low oxygen levels, or toxins in the water may have caused the deaths. And official cause is being determined.

Tanner, Alabama -

Over 300 Grackles found dead along the side of the freeway in Alabama, cause of death is thought to be some kind of trauma. Specimens are sent off to National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin to determine the actual cause of death.

30 Pilot whales are found beached on the Island, All are either dead or dieing, cause is unknown
